Apr 16 – Environmental activities in Rhode Island are impacted by policies and regulations at the U.S. EPA as well as by programs at the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management and the state legislature. Join us for this EBC Rhode Island Chapter morning program and learn about federal and state initiatives and priorities that will impact businesses and municipalities in the state.
Apr 23 – This EBC program will discuss lessons learned during recent responses to severe weather, steps taken by the public and private sectors to become more prepared for such events, and will include information on how government and businesses can improve the implementation of recovery funding so assistance is provided quickly, efficiently, and transparently.
May 21 – Each year, the Environmental Business Council of New England (EBC) recognizes companies, organizations and individuals for outstanding environmental/energy accomplishments in the promotion of a sustainable, clean environment through the EBEE Awards Celebration. These awards were established by the EBC to encourage companies, government agencies, non-profit organizations, and environmental professionals to serve as models for others to emulate and, in doing so, further the mission and objectives of the EBC.

EBC RI Chapter Program: Update on Recent FEMA National Flood Insurance Program Changes
In the last several years, the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) has undergone significant changes. In an effort to put the program on more financially secure footing, in July 2012 the Flood Insurance Reform Act (Biggert-Waters Act, BW12), which requires the NFIP to set premiums that reflect true flood risk, was signed into law with broad bi-partisan support. In reaction to public outcry, both the House and the Senate have since passed bills to reduce or delay the reforms outlined BW12. In addition, last year’s Omnibus Spending Bill did delay FEMA’s ability to implement parts of BW12 , including the ability to use updated flood risk maps to prepare for rate increases, for at least a year.
In parallel with the regulatory changes, flood maps are in the process of being updated country-wide. The map updates include significant changes to the engineering analyses, specifically the approaches for coastal areas, used to map flood zones. In New England many of these new maps have already been released and the updated approaches used for generating them have caused significant changes in the extents of flood zones in some areas.
In this EBC program, Jessica Stimson, the RI Floodplain Mapping Coordinator will provide an update on the status of remapping efforts in Rhode Island, explain the recent and proposed regulatory changes, and summarize ongoing flood mitigation efforts along Rhode Island’s south shore. Grover Fugate, Executive Director of the Rhode Island Coastal Resources Management Council, will then discuss the implications of the new maps in southern Rhode Island. Finally, Dr. Malcolm Spaulding, Professor Emeritus of Ocean Engineering at the University of Rhode Island, will detail the flood plain mapping methodology.
