Group takes up subject of rising sea | The Westerly Sun

Westerly Sun reporter Cynthia Drummond provides an overview of last Friday’s coastal wetlands work session in Westerly here. The meeting, which was co-hosted by URI’s Coastal Resources Center and Marilyn Shellman, Westerly’s Town Planner, was facilitated by Shoreline Change SAMP Senior Project Advisor Pam Rubinoff (CRC and Rhode Island Sea Grant).

The purpose of the meeting was a collaborative review of maps detailing anticipated coastal change:

Representatives from business, nonprofit and community groups had their first look Friday at new maps that illustrate how the rising sea level will affect salt marshes in the Westerly area.

The coastal wetlands work session at the Westerly Police Station’s Emergency Operations Center was an opportunity for stakeholders to discuss how coastal wetlands might change over time. It was also a chance to include local input in the mapping process.
